Her husband, a man named Daniel Curtis, died, so Martha Curtis was left to raise her two surviving children alone. Two years later, she remarried, this time to a man named George Washington, and the former Mrs. Curtis became Martha Washington, America’s first First Lady.

Despite the tragedies in her life, Martha remained optimistic. She said, “We carry the seeds of happiness with us wherever we go.” And she was right.

So the next time you’re feeling sad, remember that wherever you go, you carry within you the potential to be happy. Realizing that potential is up to you, but it’s always there. You possess the seeds of happiness. Plant them.
