Roberto Clemente was born in Puerto Rico in 1934. He came to America to play baseball and became one of the best players of his generation. As a star for the Pittsburgh Pirates, he led the National League in batting four times and was named Most Valuable Player in 1966. And, he was the first Latin-American player to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
In 1972, Clemente got his 3,000th hit. That same year, he boarded a small plane in Puerto Rico. The plane was heavily loaded with supplies intended for survivors of an earthquake in Nicaragua. But the plane crashed shortly after takeoff. Roberto Clemente died while trying to help people who couldn’t help themselves.
Whether you’re a baseball fan or not, you can still appreciate the way that Roberto Clemente played the game of life. He made his world a better place, which means that he was an all-star on the field and off.
